HomeField 3.0: Faster, Stronger

When I was being recruited for D-I lacrosse – coaches said “D-I is bigger, faster, and stronger.” To compete at that level, you’ve got to be the biggest, fastest and strongest player on the field.

Well… we think software should be faster and stronger, but not necessarily bigger, that’s why the new HomeField 3.0 is faster and stronger than ever without adding any bulk.

It all starts with our revamped landing page. Clean and simple. You gotta love it.

But that’s just looks… log in to your account (or start one!) to see the hotness that is HF3.0…

Right away, you’ll notice a cleaner user interface. We also organized what you can do with your videos really well.

In the center column of the image above, you can see the Falmouth vs. Barnstable “video-basket.”

What’s great about HF3.0 is that you can do everything you want with this video right from that basket – see who’s editing and commenting on the video, trade it to other coaches, manage sharing with players and fans, etc. – so it’s way faster than loading new pages and the actions themselves are really snappy.

Stronger functionality combined with quicker actions means HF3.0 is battle-ready for this fall.  Log in today and put her to the test!

Huge high fives to Dan and Henry for building this so beautifully!

Archiving Bug in HF3.0 – MASHED!

Bugs! They’re a part of life whether we like it or not.

Recently, we launched HomeField v3.0. It’s the best video platform for sports teams yet.

Though the launch was pretty smooth, there have been a couple bugs (you didn’t even notice did you!), one in particular had to deal with old videos not Archiving and Unarchiving properly for coaches and athletes.

The good news? It’s already fixed. But just in case, we wanted to get the word out so if you do notice anything funny with your archiving functionality, please let us know.

Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to Jill Depetris, assistant lacrosse coach for the Brown University Women’s Lacrosse team. She reported the issue to us a day ago. Thanks Jill!

Your Browser Matters

Your browser is your window to the world that is the internet and not all browsers are created equal.  Each browser, be it Safari, Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer (IE) displays each webpage just a little bit different than the next.

With that in mind, you want to have the best, brightest window to look through everyday, right?

We’ve used them all.  (Actually, I have 4 different browsers installed on my laptop right now.  And I just made the full time switch from Safari to Chrome.  I highly recommend it).

In our mind, the best browsers are Safari and Chrome.  Then Firefox.  I don’t even want to talk about Internet Explorer, but 27% of you seem to like it, so we’ll include it in the discussion.

How do we know that? We decided to run some numbers on our analytics and compare what browsers you (our users) are using to access HomeField.  Check the chart below:

We’re very happy to see Safari has a dominant position, but the rest of the numbers get shaky…

It makes sense that Internet Explorer has a large chunk of market share, after all they are still the dominant browser… but that’s changing.  According to this post, IE dropped below 60% market share for the first time in years – a trend that is likely to continue.

Why is this good?  HomeField just doesn’t look as good or function as well in IE, in particular IE 6.0 which we stopped supporting a while ago.  If you’re on IE 6.0, please update your browser before continuing to use HomeField!

And if you’re worried about switching browsers and losing all your settings or bookmarks, don’t be!  All browser installations walk you through a great wizard that will import your bookmarks and preferences.

Here’s how we’ll break it down:  If you’re on a Mac, Safari is already there for you and Chrome is an excellent choice for power surfers.  If you’re on a PC, you’ve got to get Chrome or Firefox.  And no matter what browser you use, be sure to update it when you are prompted to do so!

Safari Safari – Speedy, stylish and a natural fit for anyone on a Mac.

Chrome

Chrome – Super fast, awesome browser plugins/extensions, built by Google.  How could you go wrong?

Firefox

Firefox – Most similar to IE, but greater performance.

Shotgun Trading – Quickest Game Film Exchange on the Web

Shotgun Trading.  Yup… it’s just like it sounds.

You’ve got game film and you need to get it somewhere in a hurry.

We know you used to burn 5-6 DVD’s and FedEx all of ‘em to your trading partners.  So just like dropping DVD’s at FedEx, we want you to be able to get all your trading done in one go and fit right into your video process.  Here’s how…

We love this new feature for a few reasons.

  • It fits right into your current workflow.
  • It streamlines the process and saves you time and effort.
  • We got to put a shotgun icon in HomeField!

Here are some step by step instructions:

1.  Start uploading your game film just as you normally would.

2.  As your video starts to upload, click the small shotgun image that says ”Shotgun Trading: Automatically send this film once it’s finished uploading.”

3.  Then, do a search for the coach you want to trade with by their name, team name or email address. [Yup, if they're not on HomeField yet, just enter their email address and they'll still get to see your game film.]

4.  Select the coach you want to trade with and do another search if you need to send to multiple coaches.

5.  When you’re ready, hit “Ok. Save Shotgun Trade.” and you’re done. As soon as your video is finished uploading to HomeField, these coaches will get emails alerting them that there’s game film waiting for them on HomeField.

Shotgun Trading is already available in every HomeField account today.  Use it for your next trade and if you have any ideas to improve it, give us some feedback!
